This is a great amp for small gigs in clubs and a great amp for recording with. You get that optional recording output that helps in silent playing as well. So this is a great buy for many reasons. This is a single twelve with an attractive tweed face and cream and black appointments. It's an all tube, 2 channel amp. I've been playing for about 15 years. Mostly electric guitar, some lead, some rhythm, and only in a few bands. I like to do a lot of recording, though, and I prefer to do it the old way and mic my amps. I was looking for an all tube amp that was flexible and had great tone.
I paid almost $900 for this unit at my local Guitar Center. As noted above I was looking for a decent amp I could do some recording with, but that would also have enough power to drive some small garage band fun, or even a minor cocktail gig.
I really love the ability to mix the tubes to fine tune my sound. This amp comes with a 6v6 and an EL84 in the sockets and a dial that you could use to mix them down. Additionally, the chassis is so easy to get to, swapping tubes becomes another tweakability feature that you're sure to love. I love the tone and power I get from the unit. A 30W tube amp can absolutely scream, and the Celestion 12 that is bolted in here really accenuates the highs and can grind with the rest of them.
Probably the only two complaints I have, is that at this price point the unit should have an onboard reverb. There's a loop for you to switch it with the footswitch, but I guess because of the closed back design it's not built in? Not sure. Anyway, the other small complaint is that while the amp clearly chimes on clean, when driven it doesn't really show a lot of character. I don't know about you, but a lot of tube amps have a signature warm and fuzzy overdrive to them, but this Egnator Rebel was kind of like, um, ho-hum.
She seems to be built like a brick shithouse captain! Yes, the amp is built very well. I don't plan on dropping it off my tail gate, nor do i really plan on taking it anywhere, but aside from the sensitivity that tube amps can have, it's tight and mighty.
Overall, a powerful, impressive tube monster that can drive all kinds of cabs if you've got them to play with, with a sweet tone of whatever you tube mixologists can come up with. Egnator clearly designed this amp to focus on it's core competencies, so there aren't a lot of thrills or frills, but there's tons of tone. Except when driven hard where I feel it loses its personality.
